Wall

This IVAM room houses a 68-metre linear section of the ancient medieval wall of Valencia. The walls of our city were its defining feature in the Middle Ages, so much so that one of the first coats of arms of Valencia represented a fortified city, surrounded by the waters of the Turia River. This symbolic representation has survived to this day, even after the physical demolition of the walls, through numerous traditional religious engravings.

The definitive wall of Valencia was built in 1356, the year in which King Peter IV the Ceremonious asked the Jurors to speed up the construction of a new enclosure due to the danger posed by attacks by King Peter I the Cruel of Castile. The new walls were to surround the suburbs and the Islamic wall, then in use. The works were directed by the stonemason Guillem Nebot.
