With the goal of highlighting the concept of “Institute,” included within the very title of the IVAM since its founding, this programme coordinated by Johanna Caplliure seeks to articulate spaces for meeting, learning and dialogue between interested audiences and the curators behind the IVAM’s exhibition programme.
Curatorial practice is the ground work on which the museum’s exhibitions are built, understanding them as cultural constructs that give rise to multiple readings and appropriations by the public. And yet this underlying work remains largely invisible to visitors, who view the exhibition as a whole. The Curators in the Gallery programme wishes to highlight and provide a voice and room for the curatorial practices behind the museum’s exhibitions, casting light on two particular moments of the journey a curatorial proposal undergoes before being presented to the public.
The programme consists of organizing two meetings with each curator working on an exhibition at the IVAM. The first one takes place during the mounting of the exhibition and, therefore, prior to the opening, thus allowing a small group of participants to enter the gallery during setup and to see the museographic approach while it is taking place. The second meeting will be a guided visit to the exhibition led by the curator which will take place while the exhibition is open to the public (this second encounter will also be open to the general public).
