Museo Anfibio

‘The term amphibious refers to organisms capable of inhabiting and moving between water and land. This symbolic condition allows its meaning to be transferred to the cultural sphere, where museums can act as mediators between different physical and symbolic territories, mediating nutrients and life, memories and knowledge,’ explained Blanca de la Torre, director of IVAM.

From this perspective, curatorial and artistic projects incorporating hybrid formats will be developed. Contemporary art, traditional knowledge, ethnographic research and environmental action will be combined around two axes: Territories-Land and Aquatic Environments.

‘It is not conceived as a mere programmatic line, but as a space for research, production and cultural action,’ emphasised Blanca de la Torre. The proposal seeks to rethink the role of museums in the 21st century, moving away from a logic based on the custody of objects to adopt a processual, relational model connected to the territory.

One of the main focuses of the Amphibious Museum will be l’Albufera, an ecosystem of great biological and cultural value. In 2026, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of its declaration as a Natural Park, an exhibition will be inaugurated dedicated to reviewing the forms of representation of this coastal wetland, one of the most valuable in the Mediterranean.
