Jesús Monterde presents Maquis, his second photography book, published in 2022 by POLVORA. In it, the photographer from Benassal, Alt Maestrat, takes us back to one of the most tragic periods of recent Spanish history: the 1940s. An era marked by repression, economic autarky, hunger, and the presence of anti-Franco guerrilla fighters who, from their hideouts in rural and mountainous areas, fought the dictatorship, sometimes to the point of shedding their last drop of blood. Monterde’s work focuses on these maquis, documenting their movements and journeys with his camera across countless locations, paths, and farmhouses near his home territory, seeking to capture, through the heavy silence of the night, the spirit and memory of the maquis.
