Juan José Lahuerta, curator of the exhibition, and Nuria Enguita, director of the IVAM, present Being an Artist. Julio González, a reappraisal of the Julio González holdings in the IVAM Collection. The exhibition seeks to shed new light on the work of this major artist, moving away from certain myths about his life and work that have persisted since the mid-twentieth century.
This new presentation of Julio González’s work is based on a study of the collection free from the prejudices of operative art history: setting aside preconceived narratives in order to rediscover González’s complexity, both as an oeuvre and as a collection. All “periods”, all “themes” and all “arts” are considered on equal terms, within the contexts provided by the extraordinary archival materials (documents, photographs, etc.) and by the history of his time or times.
