The curator of the exhibition, Bartomeu Marí, Barbara Könches, director of the ZERO Foundation, and Nuria Enguita, director of IVAM, present the exhibition Lejos del vacío. ZERO and Postwar Art in Europe.
The show offers a review of artist groups that moved beyond the aesthetic and existentialist atmosphere of the postwar period by rejecting expressive painting, gestural material abstraction, and informalism, which dominated the art scene after World War II.
The contributions of the young artists gathered in the exhibition were central to the “big bang” of art in the 1960s. Considering ZERO and contemporary groups that shared its spirit and formed a dense network of contacts, exhibitions, publications, and events (Azimut, Nul, Gruppo T, Gruppo N, Equipo 57, Nove Tendencije, among others), the exhibition highlights “congregations” of artists who operated without a unified credo or intellectual leadership but shared ambitions to “start from zero” a new way of making and experiencing art.
The exhibition brings together more than one hundred works by over thirty artists (Mack, Piene, Uecker, Manzoni, Castellani, Klein, Tinguely, Fontana, Dadamaino, Grazia Varisco, Nanda Vigo, Megert, Peeters, Haacke, Verheyen, Schoonhoven, Daniel Spoerri, among many others), as well as numerous documents and archival materials.
