Lecture: “Crossing Borders: The World of Mona Hatoum,” by José Miguel G. Cortés

Conferences

José Miguel G. Cortés, curator of the Mona Hatoum exhibition, delivered a lecture focusing on aspects of the Lebanese-born artist’s work that relate to overcoming static boundaries and limits. The discussion covered thematic aspects, the questioning of identities, and the diverse materials used in her installations. Mona Hatoum’s work embraces fluid and porous approaches that foster open and inclusive attitudes and positions, often exploring questioning and contradictions; precariousness and instability, ambiguity and paradox, as well as memory and identity, are among the most significant themes.

José Miguel G. Cortés is a professor of Art Theory at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV. He served as director of IVAM from September 2014 to September 2020, has published several books, and curated numerous exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists.
