Mission
The IVAM’s mission is to safeguard, conserve, manage, research, enrich and disseminate its collection and tangible and intangible heritage as a public asset at the service of society. The museum works to expand and develop this heritage, promoting knowledge of it, accessibility to it, and national and international reach.
As an institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art, the IVAM promotes new interpretations of its collections and promotes artistic production, research and the generation of knowledge, creating narratives that contribute to interpreting the present from a critical, plural and innovative perspective.
The IVAM is conceived as an “amphibious” museum: a museum within a museum, an organism in its own right, a hybrid, symbolic and connecting entity that also actives a programme interwoven into its actions and projects. Drawing on this metaphor, IVAM sees itself as a mediating para-institution, a platform for creation, thought and critical reflection, committed to its surroundings and open to dialogue with the city, the Valencian territory, the national context, the European sphere and global challenges.
Within this framework, the museum promotes the talent of artists and cultural agents from the Valencian Community — the genius loci — highlighting their uniqueness and strengthening their international presence.
The museum also embraces a firm commitment to sustainability, social well-being and the principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with the aim of establishing itself as a responsible, inclusive and inspiring cultural institution. Guided by this conviction, IVAM understands culture as a driving force for social transformation and the museum as a space for learning, dialogue and the continuous re-examination of the knowledge, narratives and imaginaries that shape our society.
