Since 2017, the FRAC Centre–Val de Loire has organised an Architecture Biennale that considers drawing as the original work and the building, when it exists, as a non-conforming copy.
Structured as a triptych, the Biennale explores the branching paths of the discipline. In 2017, architecture was defined as Walking through someone else’s dream; in 2019, Our years of solitude positioned architecture as a site of struggle; and in 2022, Infinite freedom, a world for a feminist democracy understood architecture as the territory of democracy.
Biography of Abdelkader Damani
Abdelkader Damani has been director of the FRAC Centre–Val de Loire since 2015. He trained as an architect in Oran (Algeria) and moved to France in 1993, where he studied Art History and Philosophy at the Universities of Lyon 2 and Lyon 3. After directing the art and architecture programmes at the Centre Culturel de Rencontre de La Tourette, he led the VEDUTA platform at the Lyon Biennale from 2007 to 2015.
In 2014, he was co-curator of the Dakar Biennale (Our Common Future, Dak’Art 2014) and the Oujda Contemporary Art Festival (Not separating from the world, Oujda 2014). As director of the FRAC Centre–Val de Loire, he created the first Biennale d’Architecture d’Orléans in 2017 (Walking through someone else’s dream, Orléans 2017). In 2019, he was general curator of the first Rabat Biennale (An instant before the world, Rabat 2019) and produced the second edition of the Biennale d’Architecture d’Orléans (Our years of solitude, Orléans 2019). In 2022, he directed the third edition of the Biennale d’Art et d’Architecture (Infinite freedom, a world for a feminist democracy, Vierzon 2022).
