Ingo Mauer: Light reaching for the moon

Exhibition

Light defines space. That is why some architects call it the fifth dimension. Not only its location and intensity are important; increasingly, in recent years, design has begun to play a significant part. Ingo Maurer (Munich, 1932) has been described by many people as the best lighting designer in the world. No other designer has shown such passion in his creations of and with lights as he has done. It is not for nothing that he is known as “the poet of light” or “the wizard of light”. Ingo Maurer’s work ranges outside all the parameters of contemporary design. At one and the same time he is designer and producer, creative artist and impresario. Self-taught and coming from the world of graphic art, in just a few years he has attained the highest levels of design. The exhibition that will be presented at the IVAM opened originally at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. It will be organized in close collaboration with Ingo Maurer and will include extraordinary prototypes, mass lighting, various unique items and models of installations which will be adapted to our rooms. The exhibition will be accompanied by photographs and videos showing some of his most spectacular lighting installations. It is also envisaged that Maurer will provide a special contribution for the occasion.
