Mou Huan

Exhibition

Mou Huan’s works cannot be classified in any determined school or trend. His creations are characterized by brilliant Oriental colours but elude a schematic definition. Departing from a metaphoric and symbolic form of expression, the artist emphasises the spiritual attraction of vision in his paintings, reducing unnecessary brushstrokes to make the work flatter, giving the spectator more room for imagination and endowing the visual experience with new meaning. In his most recent proposals, the narrative techniques have become more elusive and purged, a fact closely related with his studies at the German Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf. In his canvases we can see nameless figures, faces and expressions that are apparently not living creatures from this planet, and come and go leaving no trace. But Mou Huan’s mastery of the instantaneous dynamic gestures of these characters is surprisingly perfect. The expressivity in his works is extraordinary and it is not surprising that concepts like strength, delicacy, elegance, relaxation and virtuosity come to mind on viewing these works, and this apparently simple composition (usually in his paintings he does not engage in the application of strong chromatic contrasts) captivates the observer in a clear and natural manner. In the series of female body fragments the use of whitish grey, bluish grey and pink creates a warm effect when combined with cold hues, revealing a rich, sensitive interior world constructed with these exquisite and elegant colours. These artistic elements seem to be emotionally contradictory but they become naturally and seamlessly fused by means of a soft transition into his language of painting.  It is not difficult to perceive that in Mou Huan’s paintings silhouettes fade away gradually and colours increase elegantly, stripping the composition of stereotypes. The artist’s personality is therefore more and more visible in his works. He manages to open a door to a broader and more renovated field in painting and interprets, with accuracy and subtlety, the realistic meaning of the cultural bonding of West and East.
