An articulus is something able to bridge what is externally visible with the microscopically invisible, joining micro to macro and shifting the dualistic debate around scale to the issue of articulating, joining or relating. As an adjective, “articulate” refers to the ability to use language to express complex concepts, to hold layers of meaning, and to eloquently enable listening. Accompanied by the term “reticulated”, however, it refers to the ability to create a skin, a membrane, or embodied knowledge.

The programme ARTICULACIONS 2023/24 aims at “reticulated articulation”. The strength to transform words, gestures or the politics of images and acts into a weave, an epidermis or envelopment gives continuity to our understanding of the IVAM as a living organism. The museum opens up and deploys a series of organs with the will to make a body, a body that feeds off friction with other circulating bodies, no matter what their scale or nature. Our study programme in collaboration with the Universitat Politècnica de València and the Universitat de València is a means to strengthen our public vocation, while also enabling a transdisciplinary pedagogical experiment sensitive to the emergencies of our wounded planet, which so badly needs other ways of being in the world.

The four modules of the programme: Contemporary metabolic practices; Ruptures and remediations of discourse; Walking with our heads, thinking with our feet; and Singular/Plural, will allow us to rehearse new working methods assisted by post-identity feminisms, popular and decolonial practices, processes of globalisation and virtualisation, speculative and collective narratives, and environmental caring.

Students of this programme will be part of a heterodox institutional project which focuses on careful attention to social, creative and thought processes rather than simple results. By joining this programme, you “practice with” a community of students, professors with different professional and academic profiles, from different geographies, whose practices incisively and critically mould how different contemporary art expressions are understood, practised and thought about.

You will be given the critical capacities to analyse, design and create different types of cultural projects both individually and collectively. Final projects will be materialised at the IVAM and associated entities, giving you the chance to carry out your programme and practice in the real world.

You can explore the archive generated from the various encounters and records of the first edition here.

Frequently Questions

MODULES

Each module addresses the urgent issues of the present through practices, discourses, methodologies and projects in dialogue with the following core subjects:

post-identity feminisms

popular and decolonial practices

processes of globalisation and virtualisation

speculative and collective narratives

environmental caring

Module 1 · Practices
Contemporary metabolic practices
Artistic practices and mediation define the first unit, in which we will delve into the civilian processes that have shaped our archives and collections. By immersing ourselves in the museum and other social organisations, and seeing things through the practical perspectives of professionals in talks, laboratories and workshops, we will acquire a complex, critical view of artistic ecology. These metabolic practices will serve as a bridge between the museum and academic studies, but also between the institutions and reality.

Module 2 · Discourses
Ruptures and remediations of discourse
Module 2 of the programme is defined by thinking in action, the discourses which have shaped what we know as modernity, and the ruptures that have managed to destabilise the status quo. Through talks, conferences, seminars and workshops, participants in the programme will undergo a learning process that will open up new paths for understanding how to approach ruptures in civilisation by developing new, democratic, feminist, ecological, decolonial, technological, urban and citizen-based forms of remediation.

Module 3 · Methodologies
Walking with our heads, thinking with our feet
In Module 3, we “digest” the theoretical premises and cultural practices developed in the programme (forms of critical knowledge, management, mediation, artistic production, research, etc.) in order to articulate the methodological approaches that will define the final projects. A diverse experience of reading groups and experimental methodologies will help to broaden the roles, tools and spaces that define the “contemporary”.

Module 4 · Singular / Plural
An expanded writing (singular) project, and a programming, mediation, creation or performative (plural) project will give shape to the final project.
