43 Gary Hill’s Between 1 & 0 (1993) is exhibited by the wall at the end so that it can be seen from the first room as soon as we enter the exhibition. It consists of thirteen monitors that form a cross, indicating a place of events and encounters. The fragmentation of the images, representing parts of the human body, makes explicit reference to fluid identity, the dispersion of parts and the external formal concretion of a whole, symbolised by the cross. Nature and culture merge and at the same time are kept separate by what unites them: the impossibility of maintaining a unique discourse (personal, ethical, political) that is impenetrable and without fissures. On each side there is a video projection, one of Dara Birnbaum’s video Technology/Transformation (1978—79) and the other providing a record of Robert Smithson’s important Land Art work Spiral Jetty (1970), one of the most significant artistic examples of cartographic transformation of a natural space.
